Just because the school year is over, don't expect college towns to turn into ghost towns. Here's how five cities are living it up in the summertime.

Ann Arbor, Michigan
Ann Arbor Summer Festival

Through 7/8

A boutique music and arts festival, the three-week spectacle offers over 100 varied activities and events. The Ann Arbor Summer Festival produces two concurrent programs— one indoor and one outdoor—at different venues and spaces across the University of Michigan campus and in downtown Ann Arbor. The indoor Mainstage series includes ticketed performances of world-class music, dance, theater, spoken word and comedy. This year's line-up: Circa, an Australian circus troupe, This American Life co-creator and host, Ira Glass and Grammy-winning jazz artist Esperanza Spalding. The outdoor program, Top of the Park, is held on the campus green and offers free concerts, movies under the stars, open-air spectacles, and fun family attractions.

One of the best things about being part of the Ann Arbor business community is the support of Talk Radio AM 1290 WLBY. Lucy Ann Lance has been an integral part of promoting local businesses for decades. The Queen of Talk Radio in Ann Arbor, Lucy Ann's Business Insider Show gives organizations, like Think Local First, local Chambers of Commerce, and other business groups, the chance to highlight the benefits of buying from local business owners.

Recently, I was priviledged to appear on Business Insider with Lucy Ann and Ingrid Ault of Think Local First to talk about Davies House Inn and Davies Cottage on Parrott's Pointe and the local bed and breakfast industry, as a whole.  Click here to listen to the segment: http://lucyannlance.com/?attachment_id=23095

When local chef Lori Shepard of Simply Scrumptious Catering and Boulder, CO sommelier B. Jonathan Balliet of Wine Dark Sea Consulting collaborated on the ATHENAPowerLink Wine & Food Pairing Event, it was a match made in heaven.  Four Australian wines were presented: Small Gully Robert's Shiraz, St. Kilda Chardonnay, First Drop Cab/Shiraz Blend, and Clare Valley Pikes Riesling graciously donated by Arbor Beverage Distributing.  Paired with the most amazing food selections, the tasting received rave reviews from all of the supporters of the local ATHENAPowerLink Program, many of whom placed orders through Morgan and York to further benefit the program.

ATHENAPowerLink Program is a business mentoring program that selects a woman-owned business, assesses its needs, assembles an Advisory Panel of experts, and works with the woman for one year to help her transform her business for future growth and increased profits.

"This program is an important contributor to economic development in Washtenaw County", said Jan Davies McDermott, who administrates the program.  "The women who have participated in the program in the past have made significant strides in the growth of their businesses, but more importantly, the program has shown them the importance of looking at their businesses through the eyes of others, opening themselves up to the suggestions of experts, and making sensible  infrastruture changes for their business that will allow them to grow."

A typical Advisory Panel will consist of specialists in business and intellectual property law, accounting, management, operations, technology, human resource, integrated marketing, and sales complimented by industry specific specialists.   Past participants include:  Sharon McRill of Betty Brigade, Marisa Smith of The Whole Brain Group, Megan Torrance of TorranceLearning, Laura Spear of Washtenaw Door and Trim, Carol Kamm of Encore Online Resale, and Laura Morris of Cartridge World.  The 2012 participant is Lori Shepard of Simply Scrumptious Catering.

Davies House Inn was pleased to raise funds to support this most worthwhile economic driver for our community.  Thanks to all of those who contributed to a most successful event.

What fun to attend the Premier of the Five Year Engagement at the beautiful, restored Michigan Theater a week in advance of the national release of this newly released film to benefit 826Michigan.  Jason Segel is a chef in an upscale San Francisco restaurant, but when his fiance, Emily Blunt, gets a post-doc position at UM he ends up working at Zingerman's in Ann Arbor. Its a fun, date nite flick, but if you know Ann Arbor, your keen eye will spot some local restaurants, Main Street, and the UM Campus. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of exploring Ann Arbor, come visit and seek out the locations from the movie's scenes! Davies House Inn would love to host you.

Sept. 21, 2011 — Inns and B&Bs throughout the U.S. and Canada will honor veterans by opening their doors with complimentary stays on November 10, 2011, in observance of Veteran’s Day. In an effort within the lodging industry to honor veterans, inns and B&Bs are expected to offer free stays to thank veterans for their service to their country.

Davies House Inn Georgetown is proud to participate in B&Bs for Vets. “We are delighted to offer free rooms to vets and their guest” said Jan Davies McDermott, Owner and Innkeeper of Davies House Inn Georgetown in Ann Arbor, MI.

Jay Karen, President and CEO of the Professional Association of Innkeepers International, said, “Last year several thousand vets with their families and companions were honored with complimentary stays at inns and B&Bs and this year B&B owners hope to honor even more,” finished Karen.

Veterans interested in reserving a room on November 10 are asked to contact the Davies House Inn Georgetown at www.davieshouseinn.com or by calling 888 203 4443. Proof of military service will be requested, and all policies of the inn will be enforced for free stays.

For other participating Inns, the Vet should contact the inn or B&B where they wish to stay. Other inns and B&Bs participating in the U.S. and Canada are listed at http://www.bnbsforvets.org or http://www.bbcanada.com/bbforvets.

Ok, so the team is 3-0, and everyone is confident, but this week could be a test - even more so than Notre Dame. Who would think Brady Hoke would be playing the team he left to take his "dream" job when they scheduled San Diego State way back when?

SDS has some pretty good press, some respectable numbers, and a grudge. If Michigan starts badly AGAIN, it could be the season's first loss.

Davies House welcomes some great guests this week. The Cope family: two brothers visiting a third, who lives in Ann Arbor. All the way from CT, the Thomas family: sister, brother and son.

Here's the great fall Apple Crisp we'll be taking to the tailgate:

  • Steam one apple per person - cored and cut into chunks - I like to use apple juice, cider or diluted spiced rum to steam the fruit.
  • Add brown sugar, maple syrup or honey to sweeten to taste
  • Stir in some oatmeal - based on the amount of moisture - a cook a few minutes
  • Just before serving, garnish with berries for color and granola for crunch.
  • Serve warm with hazelnut cream, whipped cream, or for dessert - ice cream

This dish can be made ahead and served cold, but it is really yummy hot on a cold day.

What a game! The best game in the country this week - bar none! Whoever didn't stay till the end was surely bummed when they learned they missed the comeback! After a terrible first half, who'da thunk it?

All the way from Florida, for the famly that stayed at Davies House Inn Georgetown, it was a great opportunity to reconnect, reguvenate, and remember their days at UM. Pleasantly surprised at the the changes in Ann Arbor since they were students here, they enjoyed sampling the new restaurants downtown and shopping for logo items to wear to the game. Too wet for a bonfire in the firepit - Maybe next visit!

* Pumpkin Nog - This holiday drink with a Thanksgiving twist is the perfect cocktail to make for a large crowd. Created by mixologist, Tony Abou-Ganim, this festive pumpkin drink combines Southern Comfort bourbon, 12 jumbo eggs, five cups of whole milk, half a pound of superfine sugar, one teaspoon of vanilla extract, half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and half a cup of pumpkin puree.
Beat it all together with a mixer, pour into a punch bowl and top with ground cinnamon. This creamy drink will serve 15 guests and you won't be stuck all day making cocktails for everyone since it is self serve.

* Apple Cider Sparkle - A refreshing and festive drink, the apple cider sparkle is the perfect drink to have a toast with at the beginning of the meal. Take six cups of apple cider, 2 cups cranberry/raspberry cocktail, one bottle of champagne or sparkling wine and half a cup of lemon juice. For a non-alcoholic option, use sparkling grape juice instead.

* Café Royale - For a twist on your after-dinner coffee, serve the café royale. Place a sugar cube at the bottom of a demitasse cup (a cup used for espresso) and pour hot coffee over it until it is almost full. Take 1 oz of bourbon, and gently float it on top. As an added wow factor, light the bourbon on fire and stir with a spoon to put out the flame – a warm and comforting drink to sip on whether you have dessert or not.

* Rosy Cranberry Cider - If you've had your fair share of apple cider this season and can't bare to take another sip during the Thanksgiving festivities, try Martha Stewart's rosy cranberry cider for a change. Simmer orange juice from two oranges, orange peel, two quarts of cranberry juice, four cinnamon sticks, two pieces of fresh ginger sliced and sugar to taste.

* Pumpkin Martini - When you're having guests who want a sophisticated drink, bring out the pumpkin martini. Mix equal parts of Bailey's Irish cream, Disaronno Amaretto and Goldschlager chilled and strained into a fancy glass.

How exciting! Davies House Inn Georgetown was recently selected for the filming of an upcoming TV commercial. Recently contacted by Howard Morris of Strategic Marketing and Multimedia Development, Dottie's Suite became the backdrop for an ad for turning gold jewelry into cash. The actress sits at a dressing table in Dottie's Suite, sorting through her jewelry lamenting over those pieces she no longer wears and remembering the past loves from whom she received the gift. As she drops each piece into the mail-in envelope to exchange it for cash, she thanks each one for her good fortune! Clever? Watch for it, coming soon!
